Mahia Golf Club 9 Holes

January 2, 2015

The Old Course: The club was formed in 1974 by a few keen locals and the land was lent by Captain Nigel Johnston at Pahnui Station, Mahanga Beach.

The terrain was very undulating and as the course was being developed, we had two club lengths placing in which to find a nice spot to position your ball. The emphasis was on “fun” in those days.

The New Course: In 1984 the club was given lease of the Kaiwaitau Block opposite the beach at Mahia. After a great deal of fundraising we are now the proud owners of a well manicured golf course with a wonderful two storied Clubhouse which is a huge asset to the district. The course was planned by a professional, but the hard yard was done by the club members themselves, who chipped away at blackberry, loaned machinery and gave their time to get the course up and running. After22 years it is commonly referred to “as the best nine hole course around”, and is a “true links course”.

The course (5812 metres over 18 holes) is nestled among natural sand dunes, with elevated tees, dog legs. The greens have a new watering system and the fairways are all mown.
