The Wairakei Geothermal Park is a place of majestic beauty. It was against this impressive backdrop that leading British Golf Course Architect Commander John Harris saw potential to create a championship golf course like no other.
Skirting the edges of active geothermal fields he used the volcanic contours to sculpt fairways, elevate tees and greens and bury hazards within the natural landscape.
It was the New Zealand Government's Tourist Hotel Corporation who in 1970 commissioned Wairakei as a green fee facility for all to enjoy, but to ensure the course met the rigorous standards of full world class championship competition Commander Harris also employed the services of Mike Wolveridge and one of the great playing professionals Peter Thomson, five time winner of the British Open. Together they succeeded in creating New Zealand's first truly great championship golf course and a golfing experience that remains unique to this day.
